Second order Zeeman interaction and ferroquadrupolar order in TmVO4

چکیده
TmVO$_{4}$ exhibits ferroquadrupolar order of the Tm 4f electronic orbitals at low temperatures, and is a model system for Ising nematicity that can be tuned continuously to quantum phase transition via magnetic fields along $c$-axis. Here we present $^{51}$V nuclear resonance data in perpendicular $c$-axis single crystal has been carefully cut by plasma focused ion beam an ellipsoidal shape minimize inhomogeneity internal demagnetization field. The resulting dramatic increase spectral resolution enabled us resolve anisotropy electric field gradient measure quadrupolar relaxation channels separately. Perpendicular nominally do not couple energy degrees freedom, but find significant nonlinear contribution sufficiently large give rise rich diagram. in-plane act either as effective transverse or longitudinal nematic order, depending on orientation relative principle axes quadrupole leads marked both channels. We small initially enhance ordering temperature eventually suppress long-range order. tentatively ascribe this behavior competing effects field-induced mixing higher states destabilizing fluctuations.
